First of all, check out this amazing video of Las Canteras Beach, one of the best videos I have ever seen on youtube!
Las Palmas capital city is around 6km long. Once you arrive if you go to the far side (and a bit to the left) you'll find Playa Las Canteras. It's about 3 meters long starting from La Isletas near the harbour and finishing at the end of the city where the Auditorium and Las Arenas shopping center are.

All long its length are cafes, restaurants, bars, shops, apartments, hotels but all Canarian and Spanish in style, not the typical tourist establishments you'll find here in the south. Sangria and tapas served in every one for example where as here in the south you'd be hard pushed to find either.
This is another of the island's blue flag beaches and is protected by natural sand banks and a natural breakwater. The city has around a half-million people so there's always a busy crowd and as with all the beaches here, at week-ends it is packed!
The north side (nearest the auditorium) is less protected and you'll find people surfing there. It can also get a bit cruisy there too ;)
