Gran Canaria will organize a great week of themed parties addressed to gay tourism this coming year. The initiative, promoted by the Tourist Board in collaboration with local councils and private companies, aims to compete with the big love parade in Madrid and attract between 20,000 and 25,000 visitors. The Island seeks to build on its long tradition as a major vacation destination for gay tourism worldwide. Like the similar events organized in the Madrid district of Chueca and the big Gay Pride parade, the Tourist Board spoke with its supporters during the recent tourism fair in London (World Travel Market) to celebrate on the island a week of leisure and tourism events aimed at gay and gay-friendly holiday-makers.
The Gran Canaria government wants the festival to be held during the month of November, 2010, & already has contacted the municipalities of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogan & Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . The project is expected to boost business in the hotel sector and with entertainment companies, as they become the organizers of all kinds of themed parties in the larger venues.
The Tourist Board estimates this week of events could draw 20,000 to 25,000 people, which need not be exclusively gay. The authorities wants to meet in the coming weeks with the Canary Island Federation of Entertainment (FECA) and other organizations to plan the program & hopefully promote the week during the tourism fair in Madrid (Fitur ), in late January.
If the week is a success it may be repeated on an anual basis though more liklely to be towards the summer around June in future years.
